Hi Everyone, I’m wrapping up the Autumn school term with a late blog. It’s been busy across my three schools and like many teachers right now I’m hanging on!
First of all, welcome to our new users
Our LogiqBoard family continues to grow in numbers. Thank you to everyone who supports, shares and likes our work. Your positivity and feedback is always valued and drives us to keep moving forward! Rita, Marton and I are truly grateful. 🙏
New Resources!
We’ve added 64 new online worksheets called ‘Chess Fundamentals’. These brilliant resources create a foundation curriculum for new chess students. Here’s a snapshot of three. Each worksheet has six puzzles, gradually increasing in challenge with solutions too. Head over to logiqboard.com now for your free trial and gain access to these and more.

Chess in Education Courses
The FIDE Education Commission and the ECU Education Commission continue to lead the way in chess in education courses. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest courses and updates.
Maths and Chess ECU102 course
Do check out the Maths and Chess course scheduled for February. ‘Exploring Maths tasks through the theme of Chess‘ has been a passion of mine for years. Join myself and John Foley for a weekend of inspiration. Originally, a course by our Rita Atkins and John. It’s now been revised with day one focusing on maths tasks for younger children and day two is an exciting day with John.

Talking of great courses…
Last weekend I attended a great course from the Chess in Schools and Communities charity. Held at the London Emirates stadium where the Chess Classic was also in full swing.
The course on Classroom Management was led by Andrew Smith a chess teacher, arbiter and year six teacher. I’m sure you can imagine the joy when I discovered that Andrew was also a school teacher.
How could your classroom management improve?
The course was great, with lots of strategies and top tips for managing a chess classroom, from using equipment to tricky scenarios and students who need support with behaviour or emotions.
I see many chess courses for teachers and classsroom management modules within a course, but never a whole day on Classroom Management 👏 This course is unique.
My course take aways: it’s okay to teach on the board
It was interesting to hear that many teachers who lead clubs teach ‘on the board’ through children’s chess games and this is perfectly okay. Over the term these teachable moments add up.
Peer teaching
It’s also fine for students to peer teach. This approach allows me to support my less confident players or stronger students.
I’ll also be setting up a challenge corner for those ready to move on.
Overall, a great course. We all took away something different depending on our background and classroom experience. 👏
The Chess in Schools and Communities Team
I got to spend the day with my gorgeous friend Brigitta Peszleg who is also a CSC tutor.

Chess royalty, Malcolm Pein
The highlight of the day was a chat with Malcom Pein , the director of CSC charity and the man behind the vision of the London Chess Classic and Chess Fest. It’s always an honour to speak to Malcolm.
The London event was magificent.
My CSC chess school
Last Thursday my CSC students were having the time of their lives at the Emirates stadium. Oh, how I wished I was there too! CSC invites all their schools to the London Chess Classic for a fun filled day immersed in chess.
🖤🤍🖤
The school was sharing photos on their school sites. These were some of the most amazing photos I’ve seen!
They had a special lesson with CSC tutor Diego on tactics. They also had a session with Laila another CSC tutor, she prepped them for a tournament. They looked at openings and checkmate.
Chess book author
They met children’s chess book author, Onjali Q. Rauf who wrote The Game I Will Never Forget. One of the students just happened to have her previous book in her rucksack and got it signed! What a coincidence.

Tournament time
The children took part in two tournaments. One amongst themselves and one with other schools. We had also won medals and other prizes throughout the day.
Meeting the champion
The pinnacle moment was the simul with GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov! Book signings and games with the London Chess Classic Champion from Uzbekistan!
Feedback from staff and children was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The level of organisation left a huge impression on staff. A jam packed day of unbelievable events.
Tell me your highlights
Yesterday I returned to my CSC school for the final session of the term. It was truly wonderful to hear their stories about the trip. Thank you to everyone for making it a day they’d never forget. ❤️
Bingo
We also found time to record some reflections and play Chess Bingo. Thank you Brigitta for sharing the first lesson in the ECU initiative to build bank of great chess lessons. Please do click on the link and add one of yours. I’m deciding which lesson to share this week…
